Introducing Real Time Internet Usage Data Graph for System Admins

However to effectively run a large web based company we need a proper internet sharing system. It is more important when you are getting connections from different providers.

Here is an ideal internet connection distribution flow chart that one may follow:

However, the situation becomes a bit critical for the system admin when he or she needs to distribute internet connection depending on the importance of the different zones. For example, the developers may need better internet speed and stable connection than an internal facility manager. The situation is more critical when you need to maintain this within a budget or for optimum usage of the available resources.

So, here we introduce real time internet usage data graph. It will help a system admin (or a privileged user) to monitor internet connection in real time and to make necessary changes. This software can be used to dynamically switch users from one ICS to another ICS. For example think about a company with 100 internet users and 5 2mbps connections. There are 20 users in each connection. Now if connection 4 is down or unavailable, you can easily distribute the load in other ICSs (ie. 4 running ICSs will get 5 users each or according to need). You can also use it as load balancer.

Let me explain:

The header section gives an overview of a specific ICS (ISS) that you are using.

Green = Current Upload Speed in KB/s

Blue = Current Download Speed in KB/s

Pink = Upload Speed limit in KB/s

Yellow = Download speed limit in KB/s

Red = Current Ping time in ms

The X axis shows you the time. You can track the internet connectivity for last 300 seconds.

Depending on this graph you can easily switch one user or a group of users to another ICS in one click.

We have open sourced this software at SourceForge.net for further development. Hope you will enjoy using and developing it further.

Choosing a wireless router

Till now the router that I have been using is WRT54GL with the tomato firmware.

But I needed the N frequency for faster downloads and hence I decided to standardize on a new model

The features I wanted are:
1. n capable.
2. USB port
3. dd-wrt
4. external antennas.
5. Atleast 32 MB of RAM and 8 MB of flash.
6. The wired ports should be gigabit.

Finally settled on Linksys WRT600N for $168. It is much more expensive then the WRT54GL for $60.

I choose it over WRT610N becuase this one has external antennas and hence better coverage.

How to respond to information posted about you or your company on ourcommunitypower.com forums ?

I understand that there will be a lot of anger if you see negative information posted against you on one of the http://www.ourcommunitypower.com forums:

A. If your company has been written negatively about on the forums there are two things you can do:
1. You can make a rebuttal in a samebox.

How my business InterNext Technologies Inc. got 2 BBB complains is a very interesting read in itself:

The first complaint was made by a user who had asked a question in the forum with his real name and then later complained to the BBB that his name was coming up in Google searches with an embarrassing question. I changed his real name to a “Screen name” as soon as I got the complaint.

The 2nd complaint with the BBB was made by a debt settlement company that alleged that negative information about their debt settlement company was not being removed from the debt consolidation care forums.

Dealing with online defamation and libel

Running social networks and forums with close to 200,000 members has one disadvantage, once in a while some crazy person decides to stalk you.

I have run across two such incidents in my life. These people went online and posted a bunch of crap about me.

I am working with the legal authorities to get it removed. Most of the defamation is posted anonymously and due to “Safe harbor” and “Freedom of speech” issues the content may not be removed.

If you do find such content remember the three principles in deciding to believe or not:

2. There are over 1200 testimonials and more come every day.
